Diabetes Education

Millinocket Regional Hospital’s Diabetes Education program headed up by Diabetes Nurse Educator, Cheryl Carrell, RN, and Dietitian, Julia Williams, RD, DSMT, is designed to teach patients how to manage their diabetes through a comprehensive education program.

Cheryl Carrell, RN,  is a seasoned Diabetes Nurse Educator who oversees MRH’s comprehensive diabetes education program and provides education and support for diabetic and pre-diabetic patients.  She is a coordinator for both the Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES) program and National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP).  In addition to educating patients, Cheryl shares her extensive knowledge with her colleagues and serves as a consultant for patients with insulin pump issues throughout the hospital.

Julia Williams, RD, DSMT, is a Registered Dietician specializing in Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) as part of the diabetes self-management program.

 

Services:

  • Continuous glucose monitoring
  • Diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) program
  • Instruction in use of Ozempic, Trulicity, Victoza and Mounjmaro (GLP-1RAs/non-insulin injectable medications)
  • Insulin adjustment
  • Insulin pump training
  • Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT)
  • National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP)
  • Lifestyle Change diabetes prevention class

The Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES) program – previously known as DSMT – consists of 3-5 classes lasting one to one and half hours that provide the participants with information about understanding and controlling their diabetes. A support person is encouraged to attend these classes at no additional cost. One month after the class ends, participants meet individually with the nurse educator to review their progress. These sessions are held at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months.

DSMES and NDPP meet the standards set by the State of Maine as well as the National Standards set by the American Diabetes Association.
